Investigate anomalies without taking over execution
The method
Investigate anomalies without taking over execution
Ask for causes and evidence behind specific anomalies while letting responsible people propose and execute solutions within clear roles.
When to use it
- Reports are plentiful but key anomalies go unexplained, or managers take over frontline judgment.
Ask yourself
- Why did this number change, and what mechanism explains it?
- What information, authority and resources does the owner need?
Put it into action
- Choose anomalies that affect the objective and record the explanation, evidence and next verification.
- Agree on an owner and feedback time; distinguish examining a judgment from taking over its execution.
Keep these limits in mind
- The biography includes interviewees’ recollections; not every management story has been independently verified.
- Humiliation, overwork and endless questioning are not endorsed as effective management; scrutiny should be proportionate to risk.
