Design for product impact and responsibility
The method
Design for product impact and responsibility
Assess both benefits and harms to users, particularly how data use affects their ability to choose for themselves.
When to use it
- Products collect sensitive data, influence behavior or create significant effects beyond the immediate interaction.
Ask yourself
- Who benefits, and who bears the costs of errors, leaks or surveillance?
- Can users understand and control how their data is used?
Put it into action
- Assign responsibility for preventing, receiving feedback on and remedying major harms.
- Test whether data minimization and user choice work in the actual process.
Keep these limits in mind
- A speech about values does not establish a company’s actual performance.
- Tie responsibility to real risks and remedies; abstract values cannot replace functional, legal or safety validation.
