Match model effort to the task
The method
Match model effort to the task
Different tasks need different quality, latency, and cost tradeoffs.
When to use it
- Task types differ and output quality is observable.
Ask yourself
- Which steps need fast, repeatable processing, and which require stronger reasoning?
- Is the improvement from additional compute worth the waiting time and cost?
Put it into action
- Establish quality, latency and cost baselines for each task.
- Compare candidate models on the same task and define an escalation path for failures.
Keep these limits in mind
- A slower or more expensive model is not automatically more reliable; average success rates must not hide costly errors.
- Historical cost-decline forecasts are not budget guarantees; use current measured prices and task data.
- Repeated attempts on low-pass-rate tasks require independent verification of correctness; sampling more is not acceptance testing for high-risk tasks.
