Check reasoning and bias separately
The method
Check reasoning and bias separately
Alongside interests and probabilities, examine how authority, conformity and persuasive explanations affect judgment.
When to use it
- A group has strong consensus or decision-makers differ greatly in status.
Ask yourself
- Are we trusting verifiable evidence, or the proposer’s authority and unanimous agreement?
Put it into action
- Record evidence for and against, and let people form views independently before discussion.
- Check whether several biases push in the same direction and arrange a review of contrary evidence.
Keep these limits in mind
- Do not use bias labels to dismiss people who disagree.
- The psychological examples are historical explanations; they have not been independently rechecked against modern experiments here.
